The "Green Card", where all the prenatal information is recorded - ultrasounds, weight, blood tests, etc. All mothers-to-be are required by Omani law to have a Green Card. Without it, children cannot get a passport, cannot attend school, and are not eligible for other government benefits. Even the Bedouin women traveling to Muscat from the interior arrive with their Green Cards. Before 1970, when the current Sultan took power, the infant mortality rate was around 50%. Today, it's almost zero. This is a direct result of the Green Card. |
